About Retail Reasoning™

Retail Reasoning is independent retail research, published segment by segment, for the people who actually have to make the call.

Retail leaders commit before they know. Open-to-buy, receipt flow, promotional calendars, labor plans, capital projects. All of it gets locked weeks before the quarter it governs. By the time the quarter’s results are published, the decisions that shaped them are long gone.

So this publication looks forward, not back. Every edition is written and released into the quarter ahead, four to eight weeks before it opens, while the decisions are still live.

Everything published here is free to read. The advisory practice funds the research.

What We Publish

The Quarterly Retail Outlook. A segment-by-segment brief covering twenty-four retail segments on a fixed panel. Each entry carries a condition, a reading, a forward call, and a note for each of the three seats: retailers, sales organizations and reps, and manufacturers and importers. Structured like a Farmer’s Almanac. Terse, fixed format, forward-looking, with real analytical work behind every entry.

The State of Retail Report. The annual companion. The annual carries the framework and the structural argument. The Quarterly carries the perishable material. The annual is the instrument. The Quarterly is the reading.

The Retail Reasoning Index™. A proprietary quarterly tracker of public company results, trends, and announcements across retailers and reporting manufacturers. One place to find the quarter for the companies that set the terms for everyone else, organized so you know exactly where to look.

Field notes. Shorter pieces on what is happening right now, published as the market gives me something worth saying. Most of these run first on LinkedIn.

The Twenty-Four Segments

The panel is fixed. Adding or dropping a segment is a formal amendment, not an editorial choice, because comparability across editions is the entire asset. A fixed panel is worth little in edition one and a great deal by edition eight.

How This Is Different

Official data is the setup, never the finding. You already receive Census, BLS, BEA, and Federal Reserve output for free. Restating it is not a product. The work is positioning: state the official consensus, then state where Retail Reasoning agrees and where it does not. A read that merely restates the FOMC projection is not a read.

Every number carries a read, and the read points forward. No cited figure publishes bare. One sentence minimum on what it implies for the coming quarter. If nobody can write that sentence, the number does not belong in the report.

Compilation is marked. Rows constructed by Retail Reasoning carry an (RR) mark. Being open about which numbers are aggregated public data is what makes the proprietary ones credible.

Gaps get named. Some segments contain products the category data will never see. Small kitchen appliances, smart home, personal care devices, fitness equipment. Structurally safe categories holding serially lethal products. Where the public data cannot see what matters, this report says so rather than papering over it.

About David Happe

Retail Reasoning is published by David Happe, a retail executive and operator with more than three decades across some of the largest retail organizations in the world.

He has worked inside and alongside Walmart, Sam’s Club, Best Buy, and Amazon, and has served in executive roles on the manufacturing side, including EVP at Mace Security International and President of Fox Labs. He has negotiated with major retailers, built national merchandising strategies, launched and sold consumer product brands, recruited marketplace sellers, and taken two companies to exit.

He writes about retail because he has sat in most of the seats it contains.

Advisory

Independent research is one half of the work. The other half is direct advisory for a small number of companies.

Engagements are built around quarterly strategy sessions timed to your internal planning cycle, independent review of major retail initiatives before they commit, and direct access for the decisions that cannot wait for a scheduled call. The work is most useful to retailers, consumer manufacturers, marketplace sellers, and investors evaluating retail exposure.

If your team is working through a channel problem, a marketplace strategy, a category decision, or a diligence question, reach out and we will figure out quickly whether this is a fit.

Editorial Principles

Think strategically, not tactically. Long-term value over the headline cycle.

Challenge conventional wisdom, in plain language.

Respect facts, data, and real operating experience.

Never invent a figure, a date, or a source. Retrieve it or say it is unverified. A quarterly cadence gives no cover for a wrong fact. It just means the error runs for three months.

Name companies and products directly, and tie every call to operating outcomes. Markdown depth, order books, inventory, closures, margin, category exit. Never to share price.

AI Transparency

Artificial intelligence may be used in research, organization, editing, and proofreading. Every judgment, every condition, every call, and every word of analysis is David Happe’s, reviewed and approved before publication. We use AI to clarify, not to originate.

Every move matters. And every move has consequences.

Keep thinking a few moves ahead.
